Hook
“Jonas felt himself losing consciousness
and with his whole being willed himself to stay upright atop the sled,
clutching Gabriel, keeping him safe. The runners sliced through the snow and
the wind whipped at his face as they sped in a straight line through an
incision that seemed to lead to the final destination, the place that he had
always felt was waiting, the Elsewhere that held their future and their past.”

“But why can’t everyone have the memories?
I think it would seem a little easier if the memories were shared. You and I wouldn’t have to bear so much by
ourselves, if everybody took part.” The
decision was made a long before my time or yours, and before the previous
Receiver, and on and on and on.”
Recommendation:
Jonas’s world is perfect. Everything is
under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every
person is assigned a role in the community.
When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to
receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds memories of the
true pain and pleasure of life. Now it’s time for Jonas to receive the truth.
There is no turning back.
