Larry the King of Rock and Roll

Hook:
“I must have been out of my mind tired last night! This bridge really stinks big time! I could feel my face getting hot the way it does when I’m angry. Now when I look back I probably should have counted to ten or whatever people do to stop themselves from blurting out there hurt feelings but I didn’t. Instead I rushed into that room looked at Tom and screamed, ‘On your best day you couldn’t write something that good! I wrote it!’ Oops! I knew as soon as I saw both Tom’s and Cathy’s faces that they were completely weirded out to know I was the one who finished the song, even worse, they were stunned that I was mouthing off like the hothead I am. Larry You talked! I guess they were so astonished because what I haven’t mentioned before is I’m their dog.” (page 6)
“It’s an invitation to for me and Larry to perform in two weeks at a state dinner for the president and the first Lady… ‘You can’t go to the white house because of a scheduling conflict? ‘What else could be happening on March 3rd! It’s Cathy’s birthday and her party.”(page. 97)
“ Ha the truth is all dogs can talk and have plenty of opinions and ideas but are so much smarter than men and women that they refuse to talk so they can continue to be pampered by stupid humans like you!”(Page 147)

Recommendation:
Have you ever had a dog who can sing let alone talk! Well Larry can! But when it comes to a war between dogs and humans and coming back to the family he loves will he stop thinking about himself? Find out yourself in Larry the king of Rock and Roll!

Deep and Dark and Dangerous

The “Hook”
“My paintings, Dulcie wailed. ‘ Someone broke into the studio and wrecked everything. All my work, my paintings, my brushes’. Emma clung to her mother ‘Mommy, Mommy’! She sobbed ‘Don’t cry! I can’t believe it’ I whispered. ‘Who would do something like that’? ‘Come and look’ Dulcie ran back down the stairs to the studio. Emma and I hurried after her. The rain pelted us, and we held tightly to the railing, afraid of slipping on the wet steps. From the studio’s doorway, Dulcie gestured to the wreckage. It looked as if someone thrown buckets full of sand and lake water on the floor. Paint tubes were scattered tops off, colors oozing out. Brushes stiff with dried paint littered the work table. Splattered with ugly shades of reds, and yellows. In black paint and large clumsy letters, someone had scraled;
I’M WATCHING YOU TELL THE TRUTH!
Emma clutched her mother’s hand and pointed at the painting. ‘Bones’ she whispered.(Page 80)

Lynn Visible

“The hook”
“And suddenly I felt inspired. I would make something that called out to me. I grinned as I thought of Jacob at his locker talking about his shoes. Ok I would too make shoes that called out my name. I turned on my iPod and went to fashion inspiration music. I went into my closet and pulled out a pair of white pumps and a pair of tan wedge shoes. They looked boring, but not for long! I took the heel off the white pumps and detached the wedge off the other shoes. I liked the look so far-a chunky wedge base yet a delicate top. A high heel but not too high. They needed some more… I went into my closet to look around. I looked at my college of pictures on my inspiration wall. Something caught my eye. I took some things off my wall. I scanned them into my computer, shrunk them until they were tiny, and printed them out. I got some of my fashion magazines and cut out the words TRUTH. REAL. ORIGINAL. Then I dug around in a box and found some sequins and attached those too. Then I went into my closet and pulled out my box of craft supplies. I grabbed some glue and carefully decorated the shoes with the tiny pictures.” (p.67)

Recommendation

All The Lovely Bad Ones

Hook
“ It wasn’t curtains that trapped me. It was Miss.Ada’s dress. Shaking with fear, I staggered backward, trying to free myself, but the more I struggled, the tighter the dress wrapped around me. Nearby, Corey cried out in fear. I felt her lunging, twisting, and turning, but she couldn’t escape, either. Miss. Ada’s bony hands clutched us, numbing us with coldness. Limp with fear, we gave up and stumbled to the ground. If she hadn’t held us so tightly, we would have fallen to the ground at her feet. Released from the tatters of her dress, we stared into her face, little more than a skull, its eyes as dark as her grave. My book she said, give me my book”. (Page 164)

Recommendation
Have you ever felt like someone is watching you? I know Travis and Corey have. In this book the kids go to their grandma’s inn and they discover ghosts that are out to get them. When the kids got to the inn they knew something would go wrong. Then they meet Seth, Caleb, Ira and the shadow children. They are also ghosts. When the kids meet Miss. Ada., Caleb, Seth and Ira they tell Travis and Corey they need to do three steps to be free of the Lovely Bad Ones.

All I heard was I can’t believe Helen left me in the pond.” “So there is a girl named Helen ,is she a ghost.” “No she’s not and stop following me I saw you today spying on me in the graveyard.” ‘I wasn’t spying on you I was trying to protect you’. ‘Well I don’t need your protection.’ Then she ran out of the room and screamed’ Helen’s coming for you and Michael.’ Everyone thought things couldn’t get worse but they do when Helen comes!”(page45)

Red Kayak

HOOK
“Dad,’ I said soberly. ‘If I were to ask you to do something really strange, but I said it was the most important thing in the whole world to me, would you do it?’ ‘My father kind of chuckled and said, ‘It depends if it’s legal or not, I guess. I had to grin.’ It’s legal. ‘Then-yeah sure. ‘He brought his arms down and sat up. ‘If it was really important to you, son.’ Then grin slid off my face. ‘Then I need to ask you.’ Dad leaned forward, listening. I hesitated because I knew that once I said something, I could never take it back. And that everything- and everyone-will be changed by it.” (Beginning page- A Powerful Secret)

Stormbreaker

The Hook

"When the doorbell rings at 3 in the morning it's never good news...He went to his door and opened it. He could hear the two police men talking down the hall, but only a few words, reached him...a car accident...called ambulance...intensive care...nothing we can do...so sorry." (Pages 1 and 2)

"Alex lowered himself onto the ledge outside Crawley's office. He took a deep breath and jumped...'I told you the boy is extraordinary!' No, the boy;s quite mad'... So many questions, Crawley muttered.''But Im afraid i'm not authorized to give you the answers.'The second man lifted his hand he stood up behind the desk, holding the file as if to protect him. 'No'.... he began. The man fired. There was no explosion. His hands opened, and the file fell to the ground, his legs buckled and he fell back into nothing." (pg. 29 and 31)

"Alex saw it the moment he opened his eyes. It would have been obvious to anyone who slept in the bed, but,of course, nobody had slept there since Ian Rider had been killed.... There wasn't very much of it, but Alex recognized Ian Rider's handwriting.what did it mean?"(pg.83)

"Someone had dilberatley led him away from the wrong path and brought him here.
To the killing field....
He hit the ground and rolled to one side. The vehicle burst through the grass, it's front wheel just inches away from his head. Alex caught a glimpse of a squat black thing with four fat tires, a cross between a minature tractor and a motorbike." What will he do next?(pg. 112)

"Alex gave up trying to break free from the chair. His wrists were bruised and bloody where the chain cut into him,but the cuffs were too tight...'We don't have much time.' 'I am here to help you.' I worked with your uncle- Herr Rider.' Yes I am on the same side as you.' Alex was still suspicious. If Nadia Vole had known so much why hadn't she stopped him before...
(pg.157 and 158)

"Out of the corner of his eye; he saw her press down on the statue's arm. The arm moved...a lever.By the time he knew he had been tricked. It was too late. (pg.157)
