Lynn Visible
“The hook”
“And suddenly I felt inspired. I would make something that called out to me. I grinned as I thought of Jacob at his locker talking about his shoes. Ok I would too make shoes that called out my name. I turned on my iPod and went to fashion inspiration music. I went into my closet and pulled out a pair of white pumps and a pair of tan wedge shoes. They looked boring, but not for long! I took the heel off the white pumps and detached the wedge off the other shoes. I liked the look so far-a chunky wedge base yet a delicate top. A high heel but not too high. They needed some more… I went into my closet to look around. I looked at my college of pictures on my inspiration wall. Something caught my eye. I took some things off my wall. I scanned them into my computer, shrunk them until they were tiny, and printed them out. I got some of my fashion magazines and cut out the words TRUTH. REAL. ORIGINAL. Then I dug around in a box and found some sequins and attached those too. Then I went into my closet and pulled out my box of craft supplies. I grabbed some glue and carefully decorated the shoes with the tiny pictures.” (p.67)
Recommendation

All The Lovely Bad Ones
Hook
“ It wasn’t curtains that trapped me. It was Miss.Ada’s dress. Shaking with fear, I staggered backward, trying to free myself, but the more I struggled, the tighter the dress wrapped around me. Nearby, Corey cried out in fear. I felt her lunging, twisting, and turning, but she couldn’t escape, either. Miss. Ada’s bony hands clutched us, numbing us with coldness. Limp with fear, we gave up and stumbled to the ground. If she hadn’t held us so tightly, we would have fallen to the ground at her feet. Released from the tatters of her dress, we stared into her face, little more than a skull, its eyes as dark as her grave. My book she said, give me my book”. (Page 164)
Recommendation
Have you ever felt like someone is watching you? I know Travis and Corey have. In this book the kids go to their grandma’s inn and they discover ghosts that are out to get them. The ghosts are called The Lovely Bad Ones. In the middle of the night Travis’s room gets destroyed all by a ghost named Miss. Ada. She is the meanest ghost of all. When the kids got to the inn they knew something would go wrong. Then they meet Seth, Caleb, Ira and the shadow children. They are also ghosts. When the kids meet Miss. Ada., Caleb, Seth and Ira they tell Travis and Corey they need to do three steps to be free of the Lovely Bad Ones.
To Do:
1. Get proper headstones for all the ghosts
2. Destroy the account book
3. Get rid of Miss. Ada
So if you like scary go read books by Mary Downing Hahn NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Enjoy.

Wait Till Helen Comes
HOOK
“I saw her mom, she was talking to a ghost, she called her Helen.” ‘Your being ridiculous Molly there’s no such thing as ghosts.” ‘I can’t believe you don’t believe me I hate you.’ I ran up to my room where Heather was sitting on her bed crying and screaming. All I heard was I can’t believe Helen left me in the pond.” “So there is a girl named Helen ,is she a ghost.” “No she’s not and stop following me I saw you today spying on me in the graveyard.” ‘I wasn’t spying on you I was trying to protect you’. ‘Well I don’t need your protection.’ Then she ran out of the room and screamed’ Helen’s coming for you and Michael.’ Everyone thought things couldn’t get worse but they do when Helen comes!”(page45)
Recommendation
Have you ever felt like something’s watching you? Well, I know who does. Molly feels like that every day. She feels watched by Helen all the time. Molly and her brother love to explore the woods. But when there step sister starts talking to a ghost everything changes. Read this book and it will take you on a journey of bone chilling ghost stories and everything that comes together for an amazing ending. HOOK
“Dad,’ I said soberly. ‘If I were to ask you to do something really strange, but I said it was the most important thing in the whole world to me, would you do it?’ ‘My father kind of chuckled and said, ‘It depends if it’s legal or not, I guess. I had to grin.’ It’s legal. ‘Then-yeah sure. ‘He brought his arms down and sat up. ‘If it was really important to you, son.’ Then grin slid off my face. ‘Then I need to ask you.’ Dad leaned forward, listening. I hesitated because I knew that once I said something, I could never take it back. And that everything- and everyone-will be changed by it.” (Beginning page- A Powerful Secret)

"The Hook"
The Next Morning... We have a Baby-Sitters Club meeting this afternoon!!
We CAN'T stay mad at each other much longer! I just know it!! I'm going to apologize to Kristy RIGHT NOW! Hi, Mary Ann!! Hi, David Michael. Is Kristy still here? Yup. She's just-- I'M NOT HERE! Yes, you are-- David Michael, come here for a second.(pg.33-34)
Recommendation
This is the 3rd book in the popular graphic novel series The Baby-Sitters Club. This book is all about how the Baby-Sitters Club could come to an end. A fight happened that shouldn't have and it did. They started calling each other names and other things that shouldn't have happened. This is a good book for people who think they are tight with someone and something happens. If you are afraid this will happen to you and your BFF. Then you should read this book.

"Because of Winn- Dixie"
"The Hook"
'My name is India Opal Buloni, and last summer my daddy, the preacher, sent me to the store for a box of Macaroni- and- cheese, some white rice, and two tomatoes and I came back with a dog. This is what happened: I walked into the produce section of the Winn- Dixie grocery store to pick out my two tomatoes and I almost bumped right into the store manager. He was standing there all red- faced, screaming and waving his arms around .
'Who let a dog in here?' he kept on shouting.
'Who let a dirty dog in here?'
'At first I didn't see a dog. There was just a lot of vegetables rolling on the floor, tomatoes, and onions and green peppers. And there was what seemed to be a whole army of Winn-Dixie employees running around waving their arms just the same way the store manager was waving his.'
'And the dog came running around the corner. He was a big dog. And ugly. And he looked like he was having a really good time. His tounge was hanging out and he was wagging his tail. He skidded to a stop and smiled right at me. I had never in my life seen a dog smile, but that was what he did. He pulled his lips back, and showed me all of his teeth.'(pages 1 and 2)
'Daddy, do you know how you always tell me that we should help those less fortunate of ourselves?'
'Mmmmmmmm-Hmmmmmmm,' he said. He rubbed his nose and looked around his papers.
'Well," I said, 'I found a less fortunate at the grocery store today.'
'Is that right?' he said.
'Yes sir' I told him. I stared at the preacher real hard. Sometimes he reminds me of a turtle hiding in his shell, in there thinking about things and not ever sticking his head out into the world. 'Daddy, I was wondering. Well, could this less fortinate stay with us?'
Finally the preacher looked up at me. 'Opal,' he said, 'What are you talking about?'
'I found a dog today.' 'And I want to keep him.'
'No dogs,' the preacher said. 'We've talked about this before. You don't need a dog.'
'I know it,' I said, 'I know I don't need a dog. But this dog needs me. Look,' I said. I went to the trailer door and hollerd, 'Winn-Dixie!'
Winn- Dixie popped his head up and came right over to the trailer door. Then he put his head on a piece of paper near the preachers lap and grinned at him. The preacher looked at Winn-Dixie. He looked at his ribs and the matted up places where he was bald.
'What did you call this dog?' the preacher asked.
'Winn- Dixie" I whispered.
'Well,' the preacher said, 'If he is a stay than I've never seen one." He put his pencil down and scratched Winn-Dixie behind the ears. "You looking for a phone" he asked.
'Well, you just found one.

They have a bully in the fifth grade. She thinks shes all that and a bag of chips. She brings everyone down and hurts their feelings ALL the time. One of the girls is her side kick. She is thinking about saying no and standing up for whats right. She is one of the girls that is going to become the four friends. This is a great book. You are forced to turn the next page. One more thing before I go, in this book there are easy I mean is some of the parts are actual chapter and other are iming pages and video typing. So don't let that bring you down.

"Hotel For Dogs"
"Hook"
The house was white and square and too small and too perfect.
Bruce studied it from the car window. "Do you suppose there's really enough room for all of us?" he asked skeptically.
"It looks smug," Andi said. "It has a stuck- up look, as though it thinks it's to good for ordinary people. Even though the grass looks fake. I bet it's made from plastic and comes from home depot."
"Andi, that is enough!" Mr. Walker pulled the car into the driveway and brought it to a stop, but he did not turn off the motor. "You have been acting this way ever since the time we left New Mexico. We're here now and in another minute you'r going to meet aunt Alice. I don't want one more unpleasant remark- not one."(pg.1)
"We won't be able to take her east with us, I'm afraid" Mrs. Walker said. "You'r fathers aunt is very allergic to dogs, I'm sorry you can't bring yours she sadly said."(pg.2)

Violet Raines Almost Got Struck By Lightning

“The Hook”
“ Spunky, headstrong Violet Raines isn’t afraid of much, she’s lived in the Florida town of Mitchell Hammock all her life and things are just the way she likes them. That is until Melissa arrives from big city Detroit and joins Violet’s school and church. ‘She seems really cool, we should invite her to hang out sometime.’ Lottie, Violet’s best friend told her after church one night. ‘I don’t know, she looks kinda show-offy’. Violet argued. ‘Well, I’m gonna go introduce myself.’ said Lottie as she made her way over to the crowd of people swarming around Melissa and her family like they were celebrities. She came back and grabbed Violet’s arm. ‘Come on, I’m sure she’s really nice. ‘she urged and pulled Violet forward. The two of them made their way through the crowd and approached Melissa. ‘Hi, I’m Lottie I heard you were new here.’ Lottie said in that goody-two-shoes-first-impression kind of voice. ‘Yeah hi.’ Violet murmured still trying to escape from Lottie’s tight grip. Melissa smiled and Violet could already tell that the two of them were not gonna get along. She was wearing a shimmery pink dress with a white jean jacket and her face was flushed with makeup. Her long, blonde, windswept hair was gently pulled back in a loose ponytail. ‘I’m Melissa. she told them. ‘My family and I just moved here from Detroit. Lottie nodded. ‘Oh, I thought you got dressed in big city Hollywood.’ Violet joked, in a way that sounded meaner than it was supposed to. What she had said could’ve been taken as either an insult or a joke. Melissa didn’t find it too funny. She gave Violet a mean look and turned to Lottie. ‘I’ll catch you later Lottie.’ She said and headed toward the door. She turned around. ‘Nice meeting you… she waited. ‘Violet Raines.’ said Violet as politely as she could be at this point. Lottie nudged Violet. She took the hint and extended her hand. Melissa pretended not to see it and ignored her. ‘See you later.’ She said turning around. There was something about the way Melissa had looked at Violet that made her wonder if she was a little tough on the new girl. But she was joking. And it wasn’t that she was mean or anything, it was just the way she always was. And something about that gave Violet the urge to stay away from Melissa. She was nothing but trouble.”[Pages 31-34]

Violet liked Lottie as the unique, fun loving, down to earth kind of friend. But Melissa turns Lottie into a girl who only cares about makeup, clothes, and magazines. Violet is determined to get Lottie back as a friend, but when Melissa starts threatening Violet behind Lottie’s back, Violet thinks she can prove everything. The Untold Ending
The Untold Ending
Written by Sarah J.
“The Hook”
“Come on Katie!’ Sam called to his sister from the far end of the room.
‘Don’t be too scared!!’ he mocked, a big grin planted across his face.
Katie couldn’t help but smile back. ‘Okay, okay' she said as she slowly and cautiously moved toward her brother. Maggie was sitting in the corner, rummaging through boxes and pulling out gadgets of all sorts. ‘Be careful!’
Katie called to her. Maggie nodded and mumbled something that sounded like “okay". The room was dark except for a dim lamp resting on a wooden table. All of the sudden Sam’s eyes met something at the far end of the room. ‘Hey look at that!’ he told Katie pointing in the distance. Maggie’s head propped up and she crawled closer to see what he was talking about. ‘What?’ Katie asked after minutes of trying to figure out where he was pointing. ‘There, that light!’ he showed her again. ‘Oh!’ Katie’s eyes lit up. ‘Let’s go check it out!’ she suggested surprisingly not scared. The two of them together walked quickly toward the yellow blinking light not too far from their distance. They tried their best to avoid anything they might step on. When they finally made it, they kind of just stood there staring at the bright strobe like light that wasn’t actually a light at all. It wasn’t a lamp or anything, it was just blinking, there in the middle of the air. Sam bent over to check for any cords or plugs. ‘Nope.’he said standing up. ‘Well…’ Katie waited. ‘I don’t know what it is.’ Sam finished her sentence. By this time Maggie had made her way over to them. She reached her arms high in the air to tell them she wanted to be held. Sam took the hint and gently scooped her up in his arms and tucked a short red curl behind her ear. She smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck. ‘Should we…touch it?’ Katie asked him. ‘I don’t know it might be dangerous.’ He added. Maggie turned around and stared blankly at the flashing light. ‘Past!’ she whispered. Sam turned to look at her. His brown chocolate eyes met her light blue ones. ‘What?’ he asked her softly. ‘Past!’ she said again, louder this time. And before Katie or Sam could say anything, she grabbed their hands and placed them on the light. Then, she placed her hand on top and before either child knew what was happening, they had disappeared into the darkness.” [Pages 42-44]
Recommendation
In the story the Untold Ending, three siblings, Sam, Katie, and Maggie go on an adventure that could change their lives forever.
The story starts when the children’s old and sickly grandfather tells them a bedtime story in the hospital one night. The story was magical and the children wished as though it would never end. But the children assumed that ever story had to have an end, or it wasn’t really a story at all. Anyway, at approximately 10:00 that night, their grandfather died from an unexpected heart attack. His death occurred right before he was about to finish the end of the story. His last words were “You kids are magical. You have the power to do anything you want if you just believe! Now go find the end of that story!” he had managed to say. “But where do we go?” Katie asked him.
But by that time, it was too late…he was already gone.
A little while after their grandfather’s death, the children are sitting in their trailer when their mother suggests they go explore. The children find a mysterious attic they had never seen before. When exploring, they find a flashing light in the far corner of the attic. They go to check it out and all of the sudden, their four year old sister Maggie starts whispering the word “past”, and before they know it, the children’s hands are placed on the light and as if by magic, they disappear.
Soon, the children awake in a mysterious town, surrounded by people from the 1500’s. At first everything is a blur, but then it all makes sense. They were sent back in time to their grandfather’s time period. They then realize that the story he had been telling was true!! The religious battles, the war, it was all true! And they were sucked into the story to find the ending!
Then, the real adventure takes off!
Sam, Katie, and Maggie were confused and upset about their grandfather dying…and well, losing their dad. But as they travel through time they learn that life has its ups and downs, but it only takes a little magic and a whole lot of sacrifice to realize what really matters.

During their adventure they meet different characters, travel to amazing places and learn to stick together through everything. Even if their life doesn’t have an ending at all.
If you want to find out what happens to Sam, Katie, and Maggie…

Making Waves

“Hook”
“Come on Aubrey were gonna go swim another lap in the pool!’ shouted L.J from across the park. Aubrey was sitting on the top of the jungle gym, texting. It took her a second to answer L.J. ‘ Sorry guys I have to go!’ she said climbing down. But we just got here!’ Emily complained. ‘I know but I really should get going.’ She told them. ‘Where do you have to go now?!’ asked Jenna as if Aubrey’s had to leave a million times. ‘My mom just told me I have an ummm…’she hesitated. ‘Doctor’s appointment.’ She answered finally. ‘Come on that’s the third one this week!’ L.J told her. ‘Yeah, and I’m sorry but my mom really needs me!’ she said walking back to where they were laying in the sun. She rolled up her towel and flung her tote bag over her shoulder. ‘Can’t you just stay a little longer? It’s almost 3:00 which is when the lifeguards open up the “high dive” which you promised you’d jump off for the first time today!’ Jenna reminded her. ‘I know and I wish I could stay but…’ her phone buzzed again. She read the screen and then hurried for the gate. ‘Sorry guys I really have to go.’ She told them apologetically. ‘How about tomorrow, same time?’ she questioned. The girls nodded in agreement even though they already assumed Aubrey would bail on them. Again. [Pages 42-45]
Recommendation
Have you ever been really determined to give something a chance? In the book making waves, Emily, L.J, and Jenna have been best friends forever, so when new girl Aubrey shows up at the summer pool, the girls are ready to make some changes and take some big chances in letting her be a part of their trio. After giving her a chance the girls realize that Aubrey is fun, kind, and easygoing. She definitely had that “it” factor they were looking for in a friend. The girls remembered Aubrey’s first day at the pool.
She didn’t make a big entrance or anything, but as she made her way to the pool heads definitely turned. No one knew her, but everyone wanted to know her. And she wasn’t even showing off or anything, but you could tell by her confident smile that she had nothing to hide…
“I’m so glad I found you guys!” Aubrey exclaimed one morning at the pool. It was really hot, and the pool was overflowing with people. The suns gleam was more powerful than most summer days. “Yeah, I know. We totally saved you from the “ice queens”.” Emily told her remembering. The ice queens were a group of girls who came to the pool almost everyday. But, they don’t swim though, they spend most of their time looking in the mirror or making others feel bad. Plus, everyone knew they were masters at making dirty looks. But Emily and her friends knew way better to just keep clear of them. That is until Aubrey came along on her first day at the pool, and sat down with the ice queens! But the girls knew they couldn't blame her, she didn't know the history of Franklin Lakes summer pool. There was so many different things to do. There was also a lot of groups. There's the lifegaurds who spend their free time hanging out by the Snack Shack, there's the toddlers who only come to the pool on Sunday, that drip popcicles all over themselves in the baby pool, and then there's the average guys playing football and shoving each other by the park, and there's the ice queens of course. Aubrey, L.J, and Jenna never really had a group they like doing everything there is to do. But whatever it is you do, Franklin Lakes summer pool is definitly the place to be in the summer. But fun is close to an end when Aubrey starts bailing on the girls at the last minute, and makes lame excuses to leave Emily, L.J, and Jenna start to get a strange suspision that Aubrey could be hiding something. If you want to find out if Aubrey has a secret, or if the four girls will ever stay friends, read this book!!!

“The Hook”
“While Peyton was gearing up for the NFL, Eli was facing his own set of pressures at home. He was being heavily recruited by college scouts and his performances junior and senior year on the field had made him a football celebrity around town.” (page 54)
“Near the end of his senior year, Cooper Manning began to complain of numbness in his hands and fingertips. It wasn’t much more than an annoyance at first. Cooper wasn’t in any pain, and even though he found himself dropping balls that he never would have in the past, he ignored it. Eventually, though, the numbness got worse and Cooper began to have trouble doing simple things…” “He had to see a doctor. The diagnosis was devastating: Cooper had spinal stenosis...” “Unfortunately Cooper would never be able to return to football.” (Pages 34 and 35)
Recommendation

Dog Whisperer The Rescue by Nicholas Edwards
"The Hook"
"I think she wants you to do it for her,'Emily said.
Her mother shrugged. "Okay," she said, and wiped the washcloth lightly across the top of Josephine's head.
Josephine reacted with an expression of complete cat horror, and leaped back onto the dresser to safety. That was pretty funny, and normally, Emily would have laughed but she still felt strange.Confused.A little bit dizzy."(pages 6-7)
"This time, part of her knew that it really was only a dream, but she still felt as though she was drowning. The waves seemed bigger than ever, and there were rocks around too, because she kept chrashing into them which hurt. It seemed to take forever, but finally, she managed to wake herself up. She pulled her quilt closer, shivering and scared. Water seemed to be pouring all over the place, and at first she was very confused. Then she realized that it was raining outside."(page 18)
"Josephine jumped over to the windowsill and began to pace back and forth, with her tail whipping from side to side.
Okay there was definitly somthing out there.but her cat, Josephine, didn't seem nervous; she seemed uneasy. Anxious. Worried."(page 21)
"She walked down to the edge of the grass, above the rocks, and towards one of their neighbors houses.
She squined through the fog, but all that she could see was waves chrasing aginst the rocks. Lots of rocks. The Peabodys' dinghy, tied to thier dock, and bobbing up and down in the choppy water. A few lobster buoys. Other than that, she couldn't find anything unusual,or-wait!There was somthing out there!
Emily looked more colsly, and realized that there was a large, white shape on the rocks was it an old sail, maybe? Or a piece of plastic, or some Styrofoam? But the shape seemed to big for that. What it looked like was an animal of some kind. In fact, it looked like a polar bear."(pages 24,25,and 26)
"No matter what her parents did, or said Emily couldn't stop crying.
It had been days. How could his owners show up, out of nowhere, after days? It wasn't fair. It wasn't right. It had to be a mistake.
'The people say their dog fell over their fishing boat'her mother told her gently.'And that they tried to save him, but they thought he had drowned.'
Emily dragged her sleeve acroos her eyes. 'Why didn't they look for him? Didn't they care?"(page 192)
They were supposed to go over to Oceanside Animal Hospital at ten thirty to meet Zack's real owner, who was apparently a man named Mr. McGuire. With every minute that passed, Emily got more and more upset. If it had been her dog-and he was her dog!-she would have gotten her parents to drive her over the night before, as soon as she heard that someone had found him. She would never have wanted to wait until the next day to see him.
It wasen't fair.
And if Zack had come to her for a reason, why was he going to be taken away like this? That wasen't fair, either.
Crying so much was upsetting him, though, and she tried to be brave, for his sake. Maybe he loved her and his old owners, and she shouldn't do anything to make him feel unhappy. She should just pat him and hug him and feed him like this was a normal day, so he wouldn't feel as terrible as she did.(pages 202 and 203)
Emily stood there, not sure what was going on-or what to say or do.Dr. Kasanofsky's shirt was ripped, and it looked like his glasses might be broken, too.'Go back outside, Emily!' He said sharply.(page 207)
"Reccomendation"
Have you ever found something and then had to give it back? And don't know how painful it will be? I know I have. Well, in this story Emily sees something on the Peabody's rocks in their backyard. At first, she dosen't know what to think of this creature. So Emily decides to take a closer look for herself.Emily can see while shes in the waiting room at the hospital and looking at what happened to Mr.Kasanofsky she easily knows that the story the men are telling them is not the true , and in fact its not anything near the truth. I can relate to this because I have a dog, too. I think anyone who loves animals would love reading this book because it kept me on the edge of my seat! I loved reading and I hope you do too. If you want to find out what happens to Emily and Zack and find out who Zack is, you'll have to read this amazing book!

The End Of The Beginning
"The Hook"
" Avon, a rather small snail, read a book every day. He loved to read beacuse books told him al about the things that creatures did when they went on adventures. Now, Avon had noticed that when creatures finished thier adventures, and when the stories ended, the creatures were awlays happy. Because Avon had never had an adventure of his own, the more he read, the sadder he became. It was absolutely necessary, he decided, to have adventures for himself. Only then would be happy. He sighed. ' No adventures will ever come my way.'
A newt was passing by overheard Avon's words.' Nay,lad, dont say such things.(pg.12)
' I rather think', said the ant,'it's just the end of the beginning.'

Paloma doesn't answer. And Romy's not around either. Maybe they're out together. I read the note while I was going to get a glass of water. The handwriting was clumsy. Bigger and shakier than Romy's.

Jack's Run
Jack’s Run
By: Roland Smith
“The Hook”
"That’s what happened,' Jack said. He handed Commander If to Catalin Cristobal. 'I think this is yours. I think he belongs to the both of us'. Cat said, taking the battered astronaut. They were sitting in Sam Sebesta’s old room at the Nevada Hotel in Elko. Jack had his leg propped up on the bed. The desert sunlight coming through the window was beginning to fade. They had been in the room for hours talking…" (Ch.57)

The “Hook” “Double Helix” by Nancy Werlin
Eli,
It’s clear to me that you’ve gotten to know Quincy Wyatt and that your new job is with Wyatt Transgenics. I don’t want to know the details of how that happened. I don’t care. I simply ask you not to take the job. In fact, I ask you not to let this man to be in your life in any way.
I can’t tell you why, Eli. But I am begging you to do what I ask, and to do it immediately and without question.
Love, Dad
... Then I blurted, “But I have to ask questions.”
“No,” said my father steadily. “I can’t answer them.
“But if I’m giving up I’m giving up a good job-a job I think I’d really like-“
“Are you giving it up?” interrupted my father.
I shrugged uneasily. “I don’t know. If you would only tell me what you have against him.”
“No.”[Pages 57 and 58]
Recommendation:
If you like suspense, you’ll like this book. Eli Samuels has gotten into a job offered to him by the famous molecular biologist, Dr. Wyatt and he seems to be paying special attention to Eli. Is there a catch?
Eli’s girlfriend doesn’t think so, but his father is highly against his taking of the job and won’t say why. From what Dr. Wyatt has been saying, he knows it has something to do with his mother, who has Huntington’s disease. As Eli continues to work with Dr. Wyatt, he learns why his father hates Dr. Wyatt and what he has been doing. If you want to find out why, read this book.

Wringer
The “Hook”
“Arthur Dodds exploded. ‘Sissymissy!
Girlbaby!’ He gave the swing chain such a yank
that Palmer was thrown like a bronco rider onto
the ground. Arthur Dodds took off, braying,
‘I’m a wringer, I’m a wringer! I’m gonna get me
a pigeon and wring ‘im!’
And he did."
(p. 48)
“By the time Arthur got there, the pigeon
was on the ground and being chased around
the picnic tables by half a dozen squealing toddlers.
Arthur joined the chase. The bird flapped up
onto a table…. Arthur lunged across the table,
knocking drinks, smashing pickled eggs, and snatched the
pigeon by the legs in a bowl of chicken salad.
According to the story, Arthur threw his arms
into the air like a boxing champion and crowed,
‘Got me one!’ Then right before the gaping
eyes of the picnickers, he wrung its neck."
(p. 49)
My recommendation:
Have you ever had an experience that you didn’t want to experience? If you do, then you have a connection with Palmer! Palmer is a 9-year-old boy but he has one problem: he is running out of birthdays. And what exactly do I mean by that? Well, in just one year he is going to become ten years old, an age an average child in Palmer’s town would be looking forward to turn. Only he isn’t looking forward for his tenth birthday, because he is going to soon become a wringer at that age. A wringer in Palmer’s town means a boy who twists pigeon’s necks when they aren’t dead in a pigeon-shooting contest. This turns out to be a big problem for Palmer because his father was one too and encourages him to become like him. Plus, Palmer has made 3 friends, all which either are wringers or want to be wringers. Things even worsen when a mysterious bird shows up at his window. What is the bird like? Where does he truly belong? Would Palmer regret letting the bird in his room? Read this book to find out!

Ice Drift
"The Hook"
Ice sparkled from the dogs coats and hung down from their underbelly. Maja cried out, "They have been in the water. Look!" Snow pelting their smooth brown face, she yelled again, over the wind, "Could Alika and Sulu be a drift?"
There was always that dreaded possibility when the villagers were seal hunting on the floe ice, but it happened rarely. "Maybe!"
Kussu yelled back face taut with fright."We must go after them!"
"Of course!" Kussu shouted. "Of course!"
He ran to the village from the reliance and began to ring it. Their sons were in danger. The boys might die." (Page 178)
"Reccommendation"
Have you ever felt alone? Even if you're with someone you love? Well one day Alika a teenage boy, and Sulu a boy about our age are doing the things they and their tribe are told to do. Then all of a sudden everyone watched in horror as the water and ice broke and started to expand, you would be scared too, right. On the left over abandoned peice of hard ice lay Sulu and Alika frightened and scared. Along with a dog named Jamka, these two boys need help. Will they ever find their way home, or will they be trapped forever? Read the book to find out!

Do you think poems can express anything?
This delightful collection captures the everyday comedy, cuddles and catastrophes that make up family life. Poems come in all shapes and sizes. Poems can have so much but mean so little. Brian's Hunt
Title: Brian’s Hunt
Author: Gary Paulsen
“Hook”
“The deer did not know he was there and he waited patiently, controlling his breath, waiting, waiting.
Twenty yards to the young buck, maybe less. Fifteen… Perfect. Brian drew the broadhead back until it nearly touched the bow… then released."
(Page 57)
Recommendation:
Do you like the outdoors? Because Brian does. He was lost in the wilderness for months until an airplane rescued him. Most people would wind up dead, but Brian survives and qrows to love the wilderness. This story tells about how he hunts to find food. He finds a friend, a wounded dog, and he wonders where the dog came from. The dog has a deep rip in his skin and the dog stays with him as he looks for his friends. If you like adventure, this would be a book that you'd like.

Evermore by Alyson Noel
THE HOOK
‘‘And that’s exactly why I need you to stay away from Damen. Because his ability to charge my skin with his touch, and silence the world with his voice is a dangerous temptation I cannot indulge. I won’t risk hurting my friendship with Haven. And I can’t risk getting too close.’’ [Page 34]
Recommendation
Have you ever been embarrassed? Well I have! I was in school and I didn’t want any one to know who I liked. Somehow one of my friends found out. If you haven’t been in a situation like this, then put yourself in Ever Bloom's shoes. One day she went to school and didn’t want anyone to know she liked the new kid. However one of her friend's found out. The rest of the day she wouldn’t look at him. Everbloom and Damen start talking and then they become friends. If you want to see how Ever Bloom reacts to the relationship they start you have to read the book for yourself.

A Series of Unfortunate Events: Book the Fourth, The Miserable Mill
By Lemony Snicket
The “Hook”.
“Violet and Sunny stared out into the gloom, and with another creak the wooden gate swung open and revealed the short figure of a person, walking slowly toward them.
‘Klaus!’ Sunny said … And to her relief, Violet saw that it was indeed Klaus who was walking toward them. He had on a new pair of glasses that looked just like his old ones, except they were so new that they shone in the moonlight. He gave his sisters a dazed and distant smile, as if they were people he did not know so well. ‘Klaus, we were so worried about you,’ Violet said, hugging her brother as he reached them. ‘You were gone so long. Whatever happened to you?’ ‘ I don’t know,’ Klaus said … ‘I can’t remember.’(p. 82-83)
“Klaus closed his eyes in thought. ‘I wish I could tell you. But it’s like that part of my brain has been wiped clean. It’s like I was asleep from the moment I walked into that building until right there at the lumbermill.’
‘But you weren’t asleep,’ Violet said. ‘You were walking around like a zombie. And then you caused that accident and hurt poor Phil.’
‘But I don’t remember those things,’ Klaus said. ‘It’s as if I…’ His voice trailed off and he stared into space for a moment. ‘Klaus?’ Violet asked worriedly.
‘…It’s as if I were hypnotized, Klaus finished.” (p.105)
Recommendation:
Has someone you love ever acted strange? Perhaps weirder than usual? In this book, the same thing happens to Violet, Sunny, and Klaus Baudelaire. Under the care of the owner of a large lumbermill, also their fourth legal guardian after their parents died, the Baudelaire orphans find themselves from a bad situation to a worse. Not only do they have to work in the lumbermill, but they also have to be bossed around by a mean foreman, sleep in bunk beds, eat gum for lunch and a bad casserole for dinner, and they never have time to do anything except work. Of course they’ve had terrible experiences under the care of their previous guardians, with a greedy fortune-seeking man, Count Olaf, but this time things even worsen. One day Klaus breaks his glasses and goes to see the optometrist. When he returns, not only he acts strange but he can’t remember much of what’s happened. Then he causes an accident in the lumbermill hurting an innocent worker named Phil. It doesn’t take a genius to find out that Count Olaf is behind all this. But how? Read this book to find out!

Slam Dunk by Donna King
“Hook”
“In the high pressure world of sports, talent isn’t the only thing you need in order to be a winner. Ashlee is more determined than ever, and has a dream to be the best! ‘Go Ashlee!’ screamed a group of girls from her team sitting on the bench. Ashlee ran down the court, heart pounding like a boulder in her stomach. She bounced the basketball all the way down, staying clear of the other team. The hoop sit clear in the distance, Ashlee approaches it with the other team racing after her. Another scream is heard from the bench and Ashlee takes a deep breath. ‘This is it. This is my chance to be the best.’ A voice inside Ashlee’s mind echoed. She slowly reached her arms in the air and forced her feet off the ground. Her hands touch the metal lining around the hoop and swishhh! SLAM DUNK!!! The crowd goes wild and jumps out of their seats. Ashlee runs to her team receiving a variety of high fives and ‘nice shot’s from her teammates. Now it’s time to face the judges. ‘Sure that last shot was good but I was a little rusty during shoot out.’Thought Ashlee as she slowly approached the judging table. ‘Okay, this is it, did I make it or not?’ Ashlee asked herself. She was so nervous she didn’t even want to know.” (pages 12-14)
Recommendation
If you play sports you’d know that it’s pretty competitive game. But you’ve got your friends and family there to cheer you on. Once you start playing it’s hard to stop before you come out a winner.
Thirteen year old Ashlee Carson is tall, blonde and an incredible point guard. But is she enough to make it into the Girls Choice finals? With a former professional basketball player as a dad and team mates who are there for support, things are looking pretty good for Ashlee’s basketball career, there’s just one problem…Ashlee’s mom has other ambitions that go beyond the court. With her straight A semester it’s hard to focus more on sports for Ashlee, but for her mom who dreams of Ashlee succeeding in school, basketball is the least of her worries. Sometimes Ashlee just wishes her mom could be like the others, cheering in the stands with a big smile, or in the lobby after games with a welcoming hug waiting for you whether we won or lost. But nope, Ashlee’s mom wouldn’t be caught dead watching one of her games, she was too busy looking into collages or forcing Ashlee to study. How can she keep up with it all? Well, her determined dad being a player and all, can’t get enough of Ashlee on the court so you can imagine how pleased he was when Ashlee decided to try out for the Girl’s Choice National team. With her parents being divorced and her career being tugged between sports and school how does she play so good? Basketball is in her blood she takes after her dad, plus, she’s got a mind set on achievement and she can’t quit until she succeeds in everything her family wants for her. But when the finals for Girls Choice are moved to Miami, Ashlee is determined to chase her dream all the way to Florida! Want to find out if Ashlee can get permission to travel to Miami, or if she has to quit basketball altogether? Read Slam Dunk to find out!!
